"COMPTON PAUNCEFOOT, a parish in the hundred of Catsash, in the county of Somerset, 2½ miles E. of the Sparkford railway station, and 5 S. of Castle Cary, its post town. This parish took the suffix to its name from the Pauncefoot family, of Great Brickhill, who formerly held the manor. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £140, in the patronage of B. H. Hunt, Esq. The church dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient stone edifice in the perpendicular style, with tower and spire and stained-glass windows. The register commences in 1559. Here is a National school for boys and girls, as also a Sunday school. B. H. Hunt, Esq., of Compton Castle, is lord of the manor."
