School Records
The catalogue can be searched on the Fife Council website (select A in the A-Z list, then Archives enquiries).
Log books contain entries concerning the curriculum, staffing, school buildings, inspection reports and other related items. Only in very rare cases are pupils mentioned by name.
Most log books date from about 1874 (following the Education (Scotland) Act of 1872) or from the founding of the school, but a few commence in 1863. The requirement to keep a Log Book was removed in the 1950s, but many schools continued with them until much later.
School Boards were created by the Education (Scotland) Act 1872 and were responsible for the staffing, curriculum, attendance and the premises. A few pupils are named, particularly in regard to attendance matters. School Boards were abolished in 1919 when responsiblity for these matters was transferred to the County Education Authority. There are a few School Management Committee records which continue up to c.1930.
There are, in general, no admissions or attendance records for the schools concerned.
There may be several schools at each of the locations listed below. Each will have a separate series of records.
There is a guide to the holdings of school records on the Fife Council website (select A in the A-Z list, then Archives enquiries).
