Extract of coroners' inquests in the coalmining area of eastern Pembrokeshire, 1786-1830
This is a list of coroners' inquests for the coalmining parishes of Amroth. Begelly. Jeffreston. Loveston. Reynoldston and St Issells for the period of 1786 to 1830.
There are two sources for this information The primary source is the Court of Great Sessions Gaol Files held at the National Library of Wales where the reports of these survive in great numbers The second source is the coroners' bills from the Pembrokeshire Quarter Sessions records held in the Pembrokeshire Record Office As the survival rate for coroners' reports in the 1820-30 period is poor. the information from the bills can show that an inquest at least took place For these later entries little further information is available But if you are interested in an entry for which a report does survive. send me an email and I'll reply with any other information I have for it
See this entry on my blog for more details https://snorbens.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/sudden-or-unexplained-deaths/

Reported deaths from coalmining accidents in eastern Pembrokeshire: 1830-1936
This dataset combines material from multiple sources:
- Contemporary newspapers (1832-1940)
- HM Inspector of Mines' annual reports (from 1855-1901); these are available at The National Archives catalogued as POWE 7/x
- Death certificates
- Parish burial registers
- Haverfordwest Gaol Index
- Assize records (TNA ASSI 71/x)
Details contained in the HMI Mines Reports are particularly unreliable so be prepared to corroborate them. Newspapers, although far from error-free themselves, are the prime source for this task.
I have transcriptions from newspapers and HMI reports and can forward these to you on request. Mostly the latter contain just single line entries for a particular death although very occasionally (such as the Moreton accident in 1860) there are more lengthy reports.
Newspapers, however, provide more extensive details often reporting separately and at length the accident, the subsequent inquest and results of any public subscription for the bereaved family.
Due to the nature of the source material I make no warranty that this is a complete list, just those accidents I have come across in my own research.
If you know of others, please do let me know.
